New Christopher Ward C60 Trident Mk3 designs for 2019

Recommended Posts

The new Christopher Ward C60 (Mk3 - MkIII - Mark3) is expected in 2019, according to chatter on social media and forums. A recent video about the history of the brand shows the CW team looking over drawings of designs for the new C60 Trident.

The hands are the most recognizable feature of the current C60 and it looks like they are experimenting with different shapes. One of the pictures shows a drawing with a bit more streamlined version of the onion hour hand. I think that would be my preference as it will retain the same look but created a bit more modern design.

All designs show the twinflag motif at 12 and the Christopher Ward wordmark at 9. A much better and more balanced design would be to switch these around. The twinflags at 9 would balance out the date at 3 and the wordmark at 12 is where it belongs. That's my opinion but I think many others share this thought.

The case and bezel appear to be mostly the same as the current C60. I think most Trident owners are happy with the current design so no need to reinvent the C60.

The Trident is currently offered in 38mm and 43mm sizes. A slightly smaller 42mm would be welcome but I guess it is safe to assume it will remain at 43mm. The small C60 may appeal to more buyers when it would be 40mm.

Some information and sketches of the upcoming C60 were shared in Loupe magazine:

The eagerly-awaited C60 Trident Mk3 is getting ever nearer, with many of the details signed off. So many, in fact, that senior designer Adrian Buchmann is willing to share some of them..

“This is an evolution, not a revolution,” says Adrian, “rather like when a new Porsche 911 comes out. It might be entirely new underneath, but it looks very similar at first glance – just better. This means a ten or 20 year old Porsche rarely looks outdated, and it’s the same with the new Trident.

We wanted to take everything that’s good about the current watch, then improve it. “As you can hopefully see from the design sketches above, the new watch has even more of the bold, masculine presence that the old one had, though it’s actually a bit sleeker. We worked hard to make sure that the case isn’t quite as high, for one thing, and it’s now 42mm across, rather than the 43mm of the Mk2. The overall effect is to make it seem both tightly focused and slightly more aggressive.

“We really worked on sharpening up the details too, making each element the best it can be. I’m particularly pleased with the more complex indices, which bring new life to the dial and make the watch feel more valuable, and the new Trident symbol on the reverse. It feels like a really serious piece of diving equipment now, more solid, robust and reliable.”

Hi Frank, Glad to see you're still up and running.

Cheers for sharing the pics.

I see all the dislike for the new hand set and at first couldn't get my head around why the hour hand looked bent but then I realised it appears to have a tail fin pointing straight upwards toward the crystal. (most noticeable in the first picture) Photographing it at an angle distorts the shape. I think it'll look much better in the flesh when the depth / shape can been better defined. Mind you, I'm not sure what a plane has to do with diving. It will certainly be unique. (we'll ignore my aquatico dive watch with an f16 fighter on the case back)

I'm also confused why CW are soo embarrassed about the twin flags at 12. An applied / silver twin flag at 12 would almost make me forget the hideous blemish at 9.

Thanks for joining the discussion. I have my reservations about the hands as well as they just don't look substantial enough  for a dive watch. Not sure what is going on with that hour hand as it is difficult to see in the pictures. We'll know soon enough when they are allowed to post teaser pictures.

The good thing about these pictures is that the official pictures and the watch on your wrist may turn out a lot better. We'll know more in about a month.

Agreed on the flags logo at 12. It would look so much better to at least have something there instead of just embossed flags. I am often not sure what the thoughts are of the designers and management at CW.

I wish they would have gone the C7 Rapide way and just have the flags at 12 and no word mark at all.

Couldn’t agree more - love their watches and just can’t get my head around the 9 o’clock logo (or the chosen font for that matter). Way preferred the old logo at 12, but like you, I could get comfortable with a more substantial flag logo at 12 in with white or silver.

They attribute their increased sales to their rebranding in 2016, but that’s rubbish - their products continue to improve and their marketing budget has clearly increased too. They’d get much more of a following if they at least centred the logo.

Love the fact that the C60 is going to come in a 38mm, 40mm and 42mm; I’ve been holding out for one rather than giving in to the SMP given they’re much better value for money (and 40mm is my sweet spot). However, if those pre-released teaser pictures are real and they’ve put those skinny/pointy hands on and kept the logo at 9 o’clock without making the flags more prominent at 12 o’clock, I’m definitely out which would be a real shame.

I just don’t understand what their management are thinking ruining the symmetry of the watch like that. Loved the old C60 hands too; seems like they’re losing the best bits of the watch other than the new sizes which will be much better on the new version :(

One thing to note about how the hands look in the pictures is that we mostly just see the lumed part because of the angle and lighting. I assume the rest of hands are polished and can disappear at certain angles like my black C60. It was even worse on my white C60 where the hands just complete disappear in low light.

Cheers Franks, the hands look much better in those shots. Can't quite figure out the gouges on the end of the hour hand tho?

Like the Helium valve and the colour scheme (almost gulf).

The case back seems to be a cheaper version of the existing one (missing the guilloche detailing) and the twin flag logo appears to of been made out of fuzzy felt.

The case looks very nice, but then again I would like it as it looks almost identical to my Seiko spb053 from the side.

It's interesting how CW is using these social media watch influencers to build up excitement for the release. I assume they are not financially compensated so seems like an inexpensive way to advertise.

That does look a bit strange indeed but may be reflections or the overlay of the background images.

That's what I thought as I have the same Seiko as well. The handset have similar shapes and sizes so maybe it was an inspiration for the Mk3 C60.

I'm not sold on the handset at all, it loses the Trident DNA in my opinion. I would also have liked the twin flags at 12 to have been more prominent rather than embossed. I shall keep an open mind though until I see the whole watch. For some daft reason a Titanium, 1000m, Helium Valved diver does appeal to me although it is beyond stupid for normal people! I'm always drawn to orange bits, but as my Staghorn is very similar in colour scheme I would hope that there is another option for me to look at if I can get past the handset when full details are released.

Specs on the Titanium are a bit over the top but it's more about the image and bragging rights.

New picture of the GMT. Looks like a full 24 hour bezel which is better than the hybrid bezel on the current models, in my opinion.

The bracelet with wide center links looks similar to the one on the Oris Aquis. Not sure if it looks good or not but defintely different from the previous generation. Crystal is still flat and not domed?

Posted Removed on the CW forum taken at the Manchester GTG, by member Hicksmat.

The current C60 starts at £660 and the new Mk3 at £695 so minimal price increase. The Blue /Orange Elite model is an LE of 300 pieces.
